In the app you can also tap Settings → About → Send Feedback, which opens Mail with the app version filled in. It helps to mention your iPhone model and iOS version, and what you were doing when the problem happened. Please don’t attach private documents unless you need to.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add a document?
- In the library, tap the + button. Choose Files to pick a document, Photos to read the text in a photo or screenshot, or Paste Text (shown when you have copied text).
- From the Files app or another app, share or open a file and choose FolioTone.
- To add straight into a folder, touch and hold the folder and choose Import into folder.
- Files in iCloud Drive that aren’t on your iPhone yet are downloaded automatically when you pick them (this needs an internet connection).
Which file types are supported?
Read aloud:
- PDF, including scanned PDFs: pages without a text layer are recognized on your iPhone
- Word (.docx and .doc) and EPUB
- TXT, Markdown, RTF, HTML and other text files, plus pasted text
- Text in photos and screenshots (PNG, JPEG, HEIC)
- Password-protected PDFs: enter the password to open; it is never saved
View only (not read aloud yet): Pages, Numbers, Keynote, PowerPoint, Excel, OpenDocument files, CSV/TSV and some other image formats can be kept in your library and viewed.
How does “my own voice” work?
Open Settings and tap Voice (you can also reach it from the player), then choose Record a New Voice. In a quiet place, read the sample text or speak freely in your normal voice for 20–30 seconds (at least 3 seconds, at most 30). You can play the recording back, generate a preview, then name and save the voice. It is ready after a short wait.
Everything happens on your iPhone. The recording is used only as a voice reference; the recording and the voice stay on this device and are never uploaded. Please record only your own voice.
You can save several voices and switch between them, or use a built-in voice or an Apple system voice installed on your iPhone instead.
How do I delete a voice?
Open Settings and tap Voice. Under My Voices, swipe left on the voice, or touch and hold it, then choose Delete. This removes the saved voice from your iPhone. The same menu lets you rename a voice or record it again.
Why does my iPhone ask whether to allow FolioTone to use wireless data?
This prompt appears on iPhone models sold in mainland China. FolioTone itself never connects to the internet. The prompt comes from iOS: when the keyboard appears, the system’s dictation service checks whether a network is available, and iOS then asks on the app’s behalf.
Choosing “Off” is fine. Reading, text recognition and voice creation all keep working. Only system features such as keyboard dictation may be unavailable inside the app. You can change the choice later in the iPhone Settings app.
Does FolioTone work offline?
Yes. Importing files that are already on your iPhone, reading aloud, recognizing text in scans and photos, and creating voices all work without an internet connection.
Things that need a connection are handled by iOS, not by the app: downloading a not-yet-downloaded file from iCloud Drive, downloading Apple system voices, keyboard dictation, and opening web links inside a PDF.
Where are my documents stored, and how do I delete them?
Imported documents are copied into FolioTone’s own storage on your iPhone. To delete one, touch and hold it in the library (or select several) and choose Delete. This removes the app’s copy, its extracted text and its reading progress; the original in the Files app is not changed. Deleting the app removes everything it stored.
Your FolioTone data may be included in your own iCloud or computer backup of your iPhone.
Do I need an account? Does it cost anything?
No account is needed. FolioTone is free, with no in-app purchases, no ads and no tracking. See the Privacy Policy.
